Reverend Rudolph V. Sykes, Jr. is the oldest son of Deacon Rudolph V. Sykes, Sr. and Deaconess Charlotte Robertson Sykes. He has one brother, Charlie Quincy Sykes. He is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. He graduated from Cradock High in Portsmouth, VA.
He is a 1981 graduate of Virginia State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. While there, he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
In 1983, Rev. Sykes was selected as one of the Most Outstanding Young Men in America. Pastor Sykes and his high school sweetheart, Deaconess Sheryl D. Williams Sykes, were married on January 12, 1983. From their marriage God has blessed them with three daughters: Tiffany, Brittnie, and Rubi.
Reverend Sykes was ordained as a deacon in February, 1989 at the First Baptist Church West Norfolk in Portsmouth, VA. On November 6, 1994 he was licensed to preach the gospel and exercise ministry by Rev. A. Lincoln James Jr., Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. In April 1997, he became an ordained minister and obtained a Master of Divinity Degree from Virginia Union University School of Theology on May 9, 1998.
In September Reverend Rudolph V. Sykes Jr. was elected pastor of Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church. He accepted this call officially on October 7, 1997 and was installed as pastor on April 5, 1998.
Pastor Sykes was the past president of the Joint Ministers Conference of New Kent as well as the past Moderator of the Star of East Association.
